King Charles II gave the name of this dog breed. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel is descended from the King Charles Spaniel. In the years after 1600, King Charles Spaniels were cross-bred with Pugs, which resulted in a smaller breed with a flatter nose, round head, and bulging eyes. The result of this breeding was the King Charles Spaniel (English Toy Spaniel) known today.

In 1920, an American named Roswell Eldridge donated money during the Cruft Dog Show in London to anyone exhibiting King Charles Spaniels with long noses. He searched for dogs similar to those in Van Dyck’s paintings of King Charles II and his Spaniels before Pugs were bred.

He began breeding the specimens he had collected, and by the 1940s, the dogs were classified as a separate breed and assigned the prefix Cavalier to distinguish them from other breeds. The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has been shown in the AKC’s Toy Group since 1996.
